VOD found this lone Vote No on 1 sign to Repeal PA 4 on St. Aubin off Gratiot. The UAW and numerous others have failed to contribute funds to repeal the dictator law.
It is my belief that your cause to repeal PA4 will get little or no assistance from any of the union groups in your area. It has been part of my responsibility to work with negotiation teams on union issues, and it’s been my experience that generally most unions wouldn’t care whether their instructions come from a Emergency Manager, or from the duly elected city council. Their chief concern is having more members, and insuring that the dues are promptly paid. The main issue with an EM, from a union perspective, is simply the loss of dues paying members, not the loss of the other issues relating to election of the citizen’s representatives.
I agree that some of the top union brass is mostly worried about getting their dues, but by the same token, since PA 4 allows emergency managers to bust union contracts, they are opposed to it (no more dues). The UAW et al signed on to ads to VOTE NO ON PROP 1. I was chiefly concerned because I had seen no commercials or signs up. I was pleasantly surprised today to see that Stand Up for America, which sponsored the fight against Public Act 4 in partnership with unions like AFSCME, is now running television commercials asking people to vote NO on Proposal 1. There are also many signs up in Detroit now like the one in the photo. Hopefully this will make a difference in the outcome. Public Act 4 is a threat to everyone, working and poor alike, and unconstitutional because it takes away people’s right to vote for officials who will have power over their budgets, assets, and everything else that makes up government. The Vote NO on 1 is NOT “my” issue as you portray it. It only got on the ballot through a massive grass roots effort and subsequent court battles handled by highly competent attorneys and the organizations they represented. Put “Public Act 4” in the VOD search engine to read all the stories VOD has published on this matter, to educate yourself on it. Thank you for your comment.
