I do not want to see the Island zoned for anything except a park. It is obvious that the City lacks resources to maintain the park. Today I saw no fewer than a half dozen light poles down needing replacement. Not just replacement, the electrical wires are exposed, and the old pole that was hit still laying there! During the wind last week, a tree collapsed, and hit a light pole, now the tree and light pole are both hazardous to the public, laying in the grass!! If the State is going to keep minimal fees for Detroit Residents, upgrade and restore where possible…. Let’s do it!!

Read the other stories on Belle Isle, one which includes a copy of the actual proposed lease. The state is not PROMISING to do a thing, and the “park pass” entrance fee is the state park pass which goes into the state’s park fund and would not be set aside exclusively for Belle Isle. As far as zoning, the state has not said it will abide by the city’s zoning laws, leaving it open for them to do anything with Belle Isle. As far as Public Lighting, that department has been privatized, downsizing staff and supplies drastically, over the last decade. Now an “authority” will take over, which plans to shut off 40 percent of street lights in Detroit’s neighborhoods.
