THIS is exactly why we need greater accountability and transparency within the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Purna Krishnamoorthy… I know this is hard for you and Attorney Brian Brown to experience….this is a disgrace to JUSTICE!
When convictions are overturned, people are exonerated, or juries refuse to convict, how much taxpayer money and how many additional years are we willing to spend continuing to pursue people rather than examining what went wrong in the first place?
Wayne County is already one of the leading jurisdictions in the United States for documented exonerations. Millions upon millions of taxpayer dollars have been paid because people were wrongfully convicted and yet we continue to see enormous resources devoted to appeals and attempts at retrial.
Now, PAY ATTENTION to the case of Michael Jackson-Bolanos.
Michael Jackson-Bolanos testified extensively in his defense.
A jury ACQUITTED him of first- and second-degree murder in the killing of Samantha Woll. The jury deadlocked on other charges, and both the Wayne County Circuit Court and Michigan Court of Appeals subsequently ruled that he could not be retried on the deadlocked felony-murder and home-invasion charges. Now the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has taken its fight to the Michigan Supreme Court, which has agreed to consider whether he can be retried on the home-invasion charge.
At what point do WE…the taxpayers start demanding accountability?
How much money are we spending prosecuting, appealing, retrying, defending wrongful-conviction lawsuits and ultimately compensating people when the system gets it wrong? And who is held accountable when it does?
Gerard Haycraft died due to medical neglect in prison after wrongful conviction.
This is PERSONAL for me.
They did it to my son……Gerard!
I know what it feels like to watch the power of the criminal legal system come down on someone you love. I know what it costs a family. And I know that once the system decides someone is guilty, getting that system to admit it was wrong can become another fight entirely.
That is why people need to PAY ATTENTION to what is happening with Michael Jackson-Bolanos.
You don’t have to know him.
You don’t have to know his family.
You don’t even have to believe that wrongful convictions could ever touch your life.
Because this could happen to ANY of us or someone we love.

The power of a prosecutor’s office is enormous. That power must come with equally enormous ACCOUNTABILITY.
Wayne County residents deserve better.
Michigan taxpayers deserve answers.
And people accused of crimes deserve a justice system committed to JUSTICE not simply convictions at any cost.
I’m angry. I’m exhausted. And I refuse to stop talking about it.
PAY ATTENTION.
