Following retirement, Wright’s beliefs and preaching were scrutinized when segments from his sermons were publicized in connection with the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, including his contention that the Attacks of September 11, 2001 were proof that “America’s chickens are coming home to roost” and “…not God Bless America. God damn America.”[4] Obama reacted to the Wright controversy in a speech entitled “A More Perfect Union.”[5]

Wright subsequently defended himself in a speech before the NAACP on April 27, 2008, in which he indicated that he was not “divisive” but “descriptive,” and that the black church experience, like black culture, was “different” but not “deficient.”.

Non-white majority Mankind, mostly descendants of the planet‘s earliest humans educated in the arts and sciences, long plundered by savage descendants of ferocious Vikings and other primitive Germanic tribes, will soon force America, and the white Colonial Powers it leads, to pay compensation for wrongful death, injury, stolen property and natural resources as condemned by Jeremiah Wright in his sermon.

-Whereas: Former Chad dictator Hissène Habré is about to be tried for crimes against humanity and atrocities, (Habré’s army was funded, armed and trained by Americans during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. Habré, who seized power in a CIA-backed coup in 1982 and ruled with an iron fist until his own overthrow in 1990, was used to prevent African Union Chairman Gadaffi’s planned union of Libya and Chad). -Whereas: Former Guatemalan Dictator Gen. Ríos Montt was convicted a month ago for genocide, (At the height of the Gen. Montt’s massacres, eighteen months of massacres, President Reagan visited him in Guatemala City and hailed him as “a man of great personal integrity and commitment.”) [2]

-Whereas: Jean-Claude Duvalier, the former hated and feared Haitian dictator known as Baby Doc has been arrested pursuant to trial for the deaths, torture and the disappearance of hundreds of people, (President Reagan’s U.S. ambassador to Haiti stated, during Duvalier time in office, “It can honestly be said that the Jean-Claude Duvalier presidency is the longest period of violence-free stability in the nation’s history.”) [3]

-Whereas: On Dec. 2 1987, under President Reagan, the U.S. delegation to the UN General Assembly voted against a resolution condemning Chile’s violations of human rights under US supported dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet, (Pinochet was eventually indicted by judge Juan Guzmán Tapia, and charged with overseeing the death of thousands in Chile and abroad. By May 2012, sixty-seven of Pinochet’s agents had been convicted.)

-Whereas: During the first years of the Reagan’s administration, CIA was organizing, funding and overseeing the sickening terrorist attacks on rural areas of Nicaragua, planning sabotage of industries and mining Nicaragua’s ports, which brought a US conviction by the International Court of Justice when Nicaragua sued in 1984,

-Whereas: In El Salvador, despite overwhelming evidence that by 1984, 65,000 civilians had been murdered by the National Guard and right-wing paramilitary forces, President Reagan’s national Bipartisan Commission on Central America justified massive military support, (So far, El Salvador’s amnesty laws have protected the military supported by the US.)

-Be it noted that though our mostly non-white six billion strong Majority Mankind, has not yet coalesced into a force to match the US and other Colonial Powers, its Latin America component is on its way to the day when it will prosecute America for the crimes against humanity planned and arranged by America’s genocidal speculative investment banking elite and criminal media for two and half centuries. Latinos had been damning ‘gringos’ for two hundred years before millions of them saw and heard Rev. Jeremiah Wright God-damning America on TV. Every nation in Latin America, if not invaded by troops and bombed, has had its government overthrown covertly by America, leading to massacres and years of violence and keeping the continent in poverty, its labor and resources used to make money for American banks.

In 2008, Rev. Wright detailed these US genocidal crimes around the world in a sermon on Chicago’s South Side. [5] For weeks on network news, only the “God damn America” phrase was excepted as a soundbite and followed by derisive commentary, newsworthy because Wright had long been the pastor of presidential candidate Barack Obama. For the past few months, DDOT Woodward Ave. service has been deprived of about half the usual number (eleven) of coaches each day, resulting in delays of, sometimes, several hours for passengers. Why has just the Woodward line been cut so severely?

That regionalization has now been authorized by the Michigan Legislature, with the support of some Detroit Dems. Immediately afterward, federal funds to D-DOT were cut.

Can it be that the huge number of complaints to DDOT about this will be cited by advocates of the proposed Woodward shuttle as substantiation of the claim that Woodward needs more commuter service? The non-bus-riding public has not been informed of the down-sizing of the Woodward fleet and would probably accept such claims for the proposed shuttle (which Detroiters have NOT been enthusiastic about) as valid. This ruse may be the only way to popularize the idea of Detroiters bearing the expense of a project which would, otherwise, seem to primarily benefit suburbanites – given its very limited number of Detroit stops. 

This appears to be a calculated ploy – implemented with no regard whatsoever of thehardships which it is inflicting on DDOT Woodward commuters – for the purpose of generating the false appearance of substantial grounds for funding a project which Detroiters have been pretty much in opposition to. The public should be aware of the lengths to which certain parties will go to serve their own ends – at cost to the public.

Michigan Radio interview with historian Paul Lee: Hundreds of irreplaceable books retrieved from dumpster; thousands more lost

There has been a firestorm of protest in Highland Park after the discovery that a large collection of history books, film and tapes from the city’s high school was tossed in the trash.

Some 50 protestors gathered outside the high school in Highland Park, a member of the school board quit, and several people climbed into dumpsters to retrieve what they could.

The protests focused not only on the discarded books but on the way Highland Park’s emergency manager Donald Weatherspoon is running the district.

One of those people who searched through the dumpsters to retrieve as many books as possible is Paul Lee. He is a Highland Park resident and an historian who helped build the collection of black history books, videos and movies.

Here is a video he shot while looking through the dumpster:

“It favorably compares with a good community college library, and in some respects even a university graduate library in terms of its diversity, range, and depth, and the core of it was Black history and culture,” Lee said of the collection. “It wasn’t just African American, it also covered the entire continent of Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. And there was a substantial collection on indigenous and Native American history and culture.”

According to Lee, the library originally started in the 1960s as material to teach “black studies,” lessons that would help young African Americans build a sense of self-esteem and value.

“I happened to be the first class that was taught black studies,” he said. “I was also the first class to be able to use that library, and my work as a historian since then is based upon the library that I was first exposed to in 1974.”

The collection was estimated at ten thousand volumes before it was thrown away. Lee and his team were able to recover less than one thousand.

“The state imposed emergency manager offered an apology but no explanation,” Lee said. “He only said that contractors were hired to consolidate records. Well, how does consolidation of records equal throwing out a library?”

It is Lee’s feeling that emergency management in Highland Park has turned into a disaster, and that the school district should be returned to the citizens.

DETROIT – The dream that Jerry T. Bell, a champion hydroplane racer, has been pursuing all his life formed when his mother would take him to watch the Gold Cup hydroplane races on the Detroit River as a child.  His family lived close to the river in the city. Bell was entranced by the sight of the powerful, brilliantly-colored winged boats cutting the waves at super high speeds.

He began racing hydroplanes in 1995 under the tutelage of the first Black hydroplane racer, Teddy Dudley.  He was the American Power Boat Association (APBA) High Point Champion for Region 6 in 2000, and won two fourth-place finishes in the Gold Cup in 2003 and 2004, among other awards. 

But in recent years, his dream has been repeatedly deferred, since the Spirit of Detroit Thunderfest was ousted as sponsor of the event. 

The dream exploded July 9. Bell interrupted a press conference announcing the 104^th running of the Gold Cup, held in downtown Detroit at Campus Martius. Mark Weber, president of the APBA, based in Eastpointe, was announcing the names of the race’s participants.

“Hey, Mark, you know what would have been good, is if you would have put me into the race,” Bell, a powerfully-built man, 38, with a resonating voice, called out. Weber claimed Bell’s class of boat was not included. He has given Bell the same story in previous years, first scheduling the class and then claiming not enough racers signed up. 

“Why can you run boats in that class in Quebec and Pontiac and Walled Lake, but not here?”  Bell responded angrily.  “No, at this time you need to explain to the media and to these people and to my fans here in Detroit, Michigan why this keeps happening.”

He said he had gone to great lengths to successfully qualify for the race at pre-tests around the state this year. Bell, who works as a taxi driver to support his dream, lost his mother, and was shot numerous times by a passenger trying to rob him in recent years, but has since recuperated from his serious injuries. 

He told VOD later that he was actually planning to run a 7 liter light hydroplane his sponsors were buying, not the 5 liter boat Weber referred to. 

At Weber’s signal, Detroit police officers and security guards ran up to Bell, who temporarily retreated, calling the issue “racism.” 

Tom Bertolini, President of the Detroit River Race Regatta, which sponsors the race locally, but is not registered with the the state as a business, approached Bell and put his hand on him, nearly occasioning a fist fight. Bell furiously told Bertolini to get his hands off.

 Scott Allen, Commodore of the Detroit Yacht Club (DYC), a sponsor of the race, then took the podium. VOD confronted him with the fact that the DYC did not admit Blacks as members until 1968, and demanded to know how many Detroiters and/or Blacks are participating as drivers in this year’s Gold Cup. The DYC pays only $1 a year to the city for use of its prime location on Belle Isle.  Allen earlier supported a state take-over of the island. 

Weber responded that he did not know, and would have to look up the figures at his Eastpointe office. 

In their article on the confrontation, MLive’s Gus Burns reported, “Weber admits ‘all motorsports’ are traditionally lopsided in terms of the race of their participants. ‘I don’t know why,’ he said.”

Bell said he has contacted the National Action Network through Rev. Charles Williams of the Michigan chapter, and expects them to weigh in on the matter before the races.

“I’m more qualified than a lot of these drivers, and I have the right to run in my own city,” he said. The race requires city permits and expenses for police and recreation department services on city-owned property, although it brings in little real revenue to the city itself. City-owned parks including Erma Henderson and Waterworks Parks will be cordoned off to non-ticket holders. 

Driver Mark Evans, whose crew is competing in the races, hugged Bell, congratulating him on his courage. He offered to sell Bell his boat. Bell said he and Evans are long-time friends, and that Evans is one of the Gold Cup’s best drivers.

Mayoral candidate and long-time educator and athlete John Telford, who accompanied Bell, said, “This is nothing but institutional racism. They just are bound and determined they are not going to let this man race, because they’re afraid he will win, even in a higher class. He’s a champion racer.” Don Holland, a Telford supporter, said, “Here is a Detroiter, he’s not from Livonia. He’s qualified. Instead of snubbing him they should be embracing him.”

The APBA was named the national governing body for powerboat racing, the only one in the U.S. authorized to sanction races, by the Union Internatonale Motonautique (UIM), currently headquartered in the kingdom of Monaco, early in the last century. The UIM was founded by wealthy British and European individuals. No government has authorized either the UIM or the APBA to rule over power boat racing, although the APBA was first incorporated in 1918 in the state of New York through a routine act of the legislature.

The APBA’s self-anointed powers have been a matter of dispute by rival organizations in previous years. It is now officially headquartered in Michigan at the Eastpointe office. The state website shows it claims non-profit status, meaning it is exempt from taxation on the money it rakes in on ticket sales, vendor sponsorships and other matters. However, it is not registered with the IRS as a non-profit according to Guidestar.org. The IRS sends all non-profit tax filings to Guidestar.

Despite a request from Bell’s attorney in 2011, the APBA has not implemented “a rule in the APBA Rule book that admonishes and prohibits discriminatory practices based on race, sex or religion against properly qualifying racers.”  See Jerry Bell lawyer letter 5 10 11.

Bell has been fighting for re-admission to the races since the historic 100^th-running of the Gold Cup in 2008. The first Gold Cup race was held on the Detroit River in 1904.. Detroit was made the permanent home of the national Gold Cup Race, the boating equivalent of the Indianapolis 500, in 2000.

In 2008, excited high school students from the Detroit Public Schools Cornelius Golightly Career and Technical Center, along with their teacher, made up Bell’s crew. Bell looked forward to becoming the first Black driver to win the Gold Cup. But the team’s hopes were dashed when Weber eliminated “The President’s Cup,” the automotive-powered boat class they were registered for. 

Bell said his boat was big enough and strong enough to compete in higher-level classes, but was still denied entry.  Weber admitted then that there were no other Detroit residents or Blacks in the race. 

At the time, political consultant Sam Riddle, who is again working with Bell as press representative for NAN, said, “The City of Detroit should reconsider sponsoring and committing resources to that boat race if citizens who are qualified to race and run their boats are not allowed to do so. I have recommended that Jerry also begin approaching the sponsors of the race asking them to withdraw their sponsorship until everyone has equal opportunity in the race.” 

Quicken Loans was also a sponsor of this year’s Grand Prix. It’s CEO Dan Gilbert is competing with Mike Illitch to buy up downtown and midtown.

This year, race sponsors include the Downtown Detroit Partnership, Dan Gilbert’s Quicken Loans, Jarvis Property Management, Made in Detroit, DTE Energy, MGM Grand Casino, Ally Financial, Opportunity Detroit, Badass Beer, and Chevy Drives the Motor City, among others. 

In 2009, Bell ran an exhibition race during the Detroit River Days. In 2010, Bell met with all the necessary entities to plan out his exhibition race course for River Days, including the Coast Guard, the Detroit Fire and Police Departments, state agencies and others.

But the APBA again intervened, along with numerous APBA members who posted racist threats using the “n” word and other derogatory terms on the APBA website. They denied him entrance to the Gold Cup, then sabotaged his planned Detroit River Days exhibition races. In an email to the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC), they claimed Bell could not secure insurance through their preferred agencies. The DEGC then sent Bell an email telling him to work it out with the APBA/DRRA and washing their hands of the matter.

Bell went before the Detroit City Council, who at first held up the city permit for the races, but later caved in and granted it. 

Weber announced at the beginning of the press conference July 9 that musician Kid Rock resurrected the races, and is sponsoring a free day on Friday, July 12. Rick Springfield and other musicians will also be playing. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday run from $15 to $25o, with tickets for recreational vehicle parking from $300 to $500.

Bell said he is not going, and he is not giving up until he wins his rightful place. 

“The struggle continues,” he said.

In protest of California prison torture chambers, some 30,000 desperate inmates began a hunger strike Monday morning, according to reports by human rights defenders and state officials. Torture in America’s prisons is the nation’s most pressing human rights issue and among the least recognized by the public.

Approximately 30,000 inmates across two-thirds of the state’s 34 state prisons refused breakfast Monday morning and 2,300 refused to go to work or classes, reported the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) on Monday.

The torture chambers are officially called Security Housing Units, SHUs. Without sunlight or human contact, inmates have likened the SHU to a place where they are buried alive.

“The SHU conditions are torturous,” said Bilal Ali, a speaker and organizer with a coalition that demonstrated Monday in solidarity with inmates. “The [SHUs] are not right. I don’t want my tax money supporting it,” he said.

“The prisoners are saying that they screwed up and have to do their time, but they can’t be tortured,” Ali stated.

CDCR spokeswoman Terry Thornton said that 4,527 inmates on Friday were housed in California’s SHUs.

Approximately 100,000 inmates across the United States are tortured daily by being in solitary confinement, more than any other country in the world.

With only five percent of the world’s population, the U.S. houses twenty-five percent of the world’s prisoners.

Profits keep America’s prison industry active.

The $50 billion a year state prison industry is led by California.

That $50 billion excludes tens of billions spent by the federal government to police, prosecute, and imprison individuals.

What does this big business profit mean to taxpayers?

Californians pay $50,000 a year per prisoner under age 55; $150,000 per prisoner over age 55 for prison residency; and $184,000 a year per person on death row.

A seamless drug trade, planting drugs on innocent people and framing other innocent people in other ways all help keep prison cells full and demand high for more profitable prisons.

“Prisoners in Security Housing Units are forced to spend 23 hours a day in a small, window-less room with little contact with others,” Ali said. “Coalition members have been hosting events throughout California to push officials to make five system changes.”

Prisoner demands since 2011 call for state officials to: reform policies that punish groups for individuals’ actions, stop rewarding those providing information on others, improve nutrition, institute constructive programs for those in solitary confinement and curtail long-term use of SHUs.

To help spotlight California’s tortured inmates’ plight, about 75 people rallied Monday in downtown LA outside the Ronald Reagan State Building. The rally was a kick-off of the hunger strike to protest solitary confinement that participants recognize as torture.

The Prison Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition organized the rally. The coalition includes members from prison and human rights groups in LA. (Website at http://prisonerhungerstrikesolidarity.wordpress.com .)

CDCR officials say they will not recognize the hunger strike until more meals have been missed.

Are SHUs torture cambers?

CDCR officials also claim Security Housing Units are not “solitary confinement.”

The United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross recognize solitary confinement as torture.

Solitary confinement results in psychosis, insanity, and suicide, as confirmed by CIA researchers.

Solitary confinement effects include physical injury, human rights defender Andy Worthington has explained:

“EEG studies going back to the nineteen-sixties have shown diffuse slowing of brain waves in prisoners after a week or more of solitary confinement. In 1992, fifty-seven prisoners of war, released after an average of six months in detention camps in the former Yugoslavia, were examined using EEG-like tests. The recordings revealed brain abnormalities months afterward; the most severe were found in prisoners who had endured either head trauma sufficient to render them unconscious or, yes, solitary confinement. Without sustained social interaction, the human brain may become as impaired as one that has incurred a traumatic injury.”

“If the public at last begins to acknowledge long-term solitary confinement as a form of torture and a major human rights issue, it will be owing largely to the efforts of these activists – and to a group of prisoners who, for a few weeks this summer, starved themselves in solitude to bring their torment to light,” stated Solitary Watch’s James Ridgeway and Jean Casella – in July 2011 during California’s historical Pelican Bay Prison hunger strike.

Even with some 16,000 California inmates participating in that 2011 hunger strike, corporate media failed to report the historical event, so the public continued failing to acknowledge the barbaric practice of torture through solitary confinement.

Today, twice as many California inmates are prepared to risk dying from starvation or retaliation (such as force-feeding) so the American public will recognize torture occurring as standard operating procedure on US soil, uphold human rights, reject the un-American, immoral practice of torture and pressure officials to do the same.

Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky stated, “The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.”

DETROIT (July 9) — The already uphill write-in campaign of former mayoral candidate Mike Duggan was likely dealt a fatal blow late last evening when a legal challenge was filed in the Wayne County Circuit Court by Detroit mayoral candidate Tom Barrow.

Joined by activist Robert Davis, the suit alleges that Duggan’s write-in candidacy is illegal and violates both the Court of Appeals and the Circuit Court’s recent decisions which held him ineligible to be a candidate in the August 6th Primary Election.

Barrow is also seeking a Temporary Restraining Order prohibiting the Duggan campaign from going any further and ending its advertising blitz which illegally instructs voters by using a sample ballot in violation of Michigan law at MCL 168.718.

In legal documents, Barrow cited Judge Lita M. Popke’s decision in Barrow v. Detroit Board of Elections, which removed Duggan from the August 6th ballot which, according to Barrow, also barred him from the primary ballot in any form. Barrow also claimed that he is violating state law in the illegal use of the official ballot. The actions effectively end any Mike Duggan campaign until November.

In a separate decision late yesterday, Winfrey lost again in the Court of Appeals which made short shrift of a desperate attempt to keep her strongest opponent, D. Etta Wilcoxon, off of the August 6th ballot after a Wayne County Circuit Court had ordered Winfrey to place Wilcoxin back onto the ballot. The appeals court decision makes it permanent.

Barrow stated “In less than 30 days Janice Winfrey has been admonished by eight judges including two from the Wayne County Circuit Court and two different Courts of Appeals losing every time on baseless ministerial legal maneuvers normally routinely handled by City Clerks all over Michigan thus wasting precious tax payer dollars.”

“In light of the 2009 debacle in which 60,00 ballots could not be recounted for which no one was held accountable and now these repeated rebukes, I now make a clarion call for the immediate resignation of City Clerk Winfrey as no city clerk in the history of the city has been admonished so many times and by so many different courts and judges. No one this unprofessional should be allowed to oversee the city’s election process,” demanded Barrow.

Barrow is also seeking to have the court halt Duggan’s unauthorized use of the official ballot (to instruct voters on how to write-in his name) in violation of state law and lacking the proper restrictive language and form, ordering that all media material containing it be destroyed or deleted immediately.

“Once again, Mike Duggan has violated the law and multiple Judges’  orders, in attempt to illegally advance a candidacy that was ended weeks ago,” said Barrow, 64. “Lawlessness by city officials is at an unprecedented all time high and we must stop these folk who just ignore our rules and our laws.”

Along with Judge Popke’s order forbidding his candidacy, Duggan is also in violation of MCL 168.718 which bars anyone from using the official ballot without permission of the Elections Commission. The Statute that describes Duggan’s latest violation reads as follows:

MCL 168.718 Official ballots; printer, acts prohibited; instruction ballots, printing.

“It shall not be lawful for…any person other than the board of election commissioners….to print, or cause or permit to be printed, any ballots in any other form than the one prescribed by this act, or with any other name thereon, or with the names misspelled, or the names, devices or designs therein arranged in any other way than that authorized and directed by the said board of election commissioners; but it shall be lawful for said board of election commissioners and upon its authorization for the chairman and candidates named on the official ballots to procure any number of facsimiles thereof to be printed on red, yellow or blue paper and to circulate the same for the purpose of the instruction of voters. Said colored facsimiles shall have printed at the head the words “Instruction Ballot”.

When Duggan held a news conference to reverse his decision not to run as a write-in, he used a magnified version of the official ballot illegally. His subsequent literature, television and radio commercials all illegally use the city’s official ballot.

“This should be an election about the future of Detroit, but Duggan and his attorneys continue to advance a candidacy in spite of the law, abetted by a seemingly rogue City Clerk,” said Barrow.

“Sadly our City Clerk has continually violated the Charter, state laws and a Judge’s order all to advance the candidacy of one person” stated Barrow, “the natural question is why? What motivates an elected official to so starkly violate her oath leading to a rebuff by eight different judges in less than one month”?

“It is unfair in a city which has a Corporation Counsel, a new Police Chief, an Inspector General, a Mayor and a City Council, all of whom should be looking into the illegal behavior of the City Clerk. It must never again be the duty of citizens to expend resources to prevent clearly routine and blatant illegal behavior,” declared Barrow.

DETROIT – Prominent Detroit activists descended on Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr’s current home at the West Book Cadillac July 4 to demand independence for their city and school district, and others in Michigan, most recently Hamtramck. They also called for the eviction of “Dictator” Orr not only from city government but from the swank hotel.

“These hostile takeovers are illegal, immoral and unconstitutional,” Richard Clay of the Coalition for Independence for Detroit declared. “All across the state, people voted NO to dictatorships when they repealed Public Act 4. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and Republican legislators put a new bill through in the lame duck session in December. Democrats and the Black bourgeoisie in Detroit, Mayor Dave Bing, City Council members, and many ministers have done absolutely nothing to stop this.”

One of the protesters announced there will be another demonstration against the pending EM takeover of the City of Hamtramck on Mon. July 8 at 8 a.m. on Woodward Avenue. No further details were given. 

Clay said the July 4 protest and a call for a boycott of the Book Cadillac, where Orr stays in an expensive suite, are the beginning of a new movement. 

“We’re coming together to celebrate a NEW fight for independence,” he said. “The Westin Book Cadillac is harboring a criminal, and until they oust him, we are asking people not to stay here. We also want them not to attend events here and refuse to host any as well. We say to Kevyn Orr—your time is running out long before your statutory 18 months.”

Public Act 436, which replaced PA4, allows emergency managers to stay for 18 months, but Governor Snyder can extend that time if he wants.  The act also mandates a state-controlled “transition” period after the EM leaves. Orr has announced that he plans sales or takeovers of major Detroit assets including the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, the third largest in the country, and Belle Isle, the largest public island park in the U.S. He also wants to eliminate 40 percent of Detroit’s street lights, and make major cuts to other services. 

Orr claimed June 14 that he is ceasing payment on the city’s debt to many creditors in exchange. In fact, most of the city’s corporate creditors will be paid by their insurers. Instead of investigating criminal acts by those corporate creditors, Orr has instead announced an investigation of the city’s public pension funds.

Three federal lawsuits filed against Orr’s appointment by union members, the Detroit NAACP and others will be heard Aug. 8 in front of U.S. District Court Judge   Steeh, according to Attorney Butch Hollowell, who represents the NAACP. He spoke at a gathering of Detroit leaders June 28, called together by Councilwoman JoAnn Watson, to denounce the U.S. Supreme Court decision gutting part of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County, Ala. v. Holder.

The July 4 protest drew Detroit School Board members Elena Herrada and Rev. David Murray, Elder Helen Moore of the Keep the Vote No Takeover Coalition founded in 1999 to combat the takeover of Detroit Public Schools, City Council candidate Monica Patrick and her supporters including members of Free Detroit No Consent, and Aliya Moore,     president of the parents’ organization for Oakman Elementary School, which faces closures. 

They chanted “No More Orr!” and What do we want—Freedom—When do we want it—NOW!” They also sang civil rights songs, including “Oh Freedom,” varying the lyrics:

“Oh freedom, oh freedom, oh freedom over me . . . . No more dictators, no more dictators, no more dictators over me
And before I’ll be a slave I’ll be buried in a my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free.” 

Council candidate Patrick said she and her group have been out every day in the city’s neighborhoods, including the Martin Luther King homes. One of the city’s dailies just published an article decrying crime there, but Patrick painted a different picture.

“People are hurting, and are very much aware of their disenfranchisement,” Patrick said. “But there is a major disconnect in terms of communication about protests and lawsuits that are going on to stop this attack. The Mayor has already taken away the Health Department, Workforce Development, and Human Services, and the people are feeling the effects of those losses. It is going to get worse under Orr. This is nothing but Third World devastation in our city.” 

Elder Moore said, “There is no reason to celebrate the Fourth of July, because Detroit is not free, we have no democracy. Our school system has been practically destroyed by state takeovers. We are crying out today for freedom for our people, Black, white, and Latino. We don’t do second-class citizenship very well.” 

She called Orr’s bus tour of Detroit’s devastated neighborhoods for its corporate creditors, which he has set for July 10, “ludicrous.” 

“We all know personally that the destruction of our schools and the theft of our homes by the banks caused Detroiters’ destitution,” Moore said. “The bankers have no solutions—they only want to make it worse.”

“He wants to move our children to Noble, which already has 550 students, and to Henderson, which has 915,” Moore said. “Our children are special needs students, with ailments like spina bifida, seizures, and sickle cell. Some have colostomy bags and others have to wear diapers. This school was built in 1928 for them, with handrails, full-time nurses, speech therapists and other specialists.” 

Detroit city retiree Carrie Williams, formerly a staff representative for AFSCME Council 25, and her husband, a UAW retiree, who now live in Henderson, Nevada, were staying at the hotel while touring the country to visit relatives.  They stopped to discuss the issues with the protesters and expressed their strong support.

DETROIT —  Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr trumpeted July 5 that the city has won a “temporary restraining order” forcing U.S. Bank NA to release $11 million a month in casino taxes. According to the Wall Street Journal, this is part of his strategy to negotiate a deal with UBS AG and Bank of America Merrill Lynch to pay them 70 cents on the dollar for a related $340 million secured loan.  Orr thus left the impression that he is going to war against the banks, at the same time he is attacking the city’s pension funds and other assets worth billions more.

The Moratorium NOW Coalition and the Voice of Detroit are calling instead for the complete cancellation of the related $1.5 BILLION pension obligation certificates (POC) loan from UBS AG and Siebert, Brandford and Shank brokered in 2005 by the city, plus billions more  in penalties, swap agreements including those with BOA, and Wall Street ratings downgrades.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Annette Berry temporarily granted the city’s request for release of the casino taxes during a hearing July 5. She ordered that US Bank NA’s insurer Syncora must “show cause” at a hearing July 26 before Judge Jeanne Stempien why the injunction should not become permanent.

“Syncora was interfering with the city’s ability to restructure,” emergency manager Orr said in published remarks. The city’s lawsuit says, “Syncora has asserted rights it does not have over collateral it does not need for the purpose of holding the City hostage for ransom.”

The Wall Street Journal reported July 5, “The city sees the insurer as a roadblock to a proposed deal to pay UBS AG and Bank of America Merrill Lynch more than 70 cents on the dollar on nearly $340 million in secured debt, according to people familiar with the matter. In exchange, the city would get back $11 million a month in tax revenue from the city’s three casinos originally used as collateral to back the debt.”

Orr admitted in his “Proposal to Creditors” June 14 that ‘The City has identified certain issues related to the validity and/or enforceability of the COPS that may warrant further investigation.” COPS, or Certificates of Participation, is another term which refers to the POC loan.

 Voice of Detroit is calling for a federal investigation of the questionable circumstances under which the loan was negotiated, and has initiated a petition to the U.S. Justice Department at http://www.change.org/petitions/jeffrey-knox-usdoj-criminal-fraud-division-investigate-criminal-bank-ubs-ag-for-predatory-1-5-billion-loan-to-detroit.

Among various possibly criminal improprieties involved in the loan: then Detroit CFO Sean Werdlow took a top position with SBS shortly after the deal, and Wall Street ratings agencies Standard and Poor’s and Fitch came to the table to push for the loan, a blatant conflict of interest. The USDOJ has sued both UBS and Standard and Poor’s for fraudulent practices. It won a $1.5 Billion settlement from UBS and is suing S & P for $5 billion.

Meanwhile, Orr said he plans to take 25 of the city’s bank and insurance creditors on a D-DOT bus tour of the devastated neighborhoods of Detroit July 10, allegedly to pressure them to agree to lower their terms for debt repayment.

“The banks destroyed the City of Detroit by foreclosing over 150,000 families in seven years,” Azikiwe said during a protest June 6 outside Greater Grace Temple, the site of Orr’s no-show public meeting. “They wreaked havoc and destroyed our tax base and our neighborhoods. We must have the complete elimination of fraudulent bank deals with the City. We don’t have decent buses, street lights and streets. Our schools are closed. The future holds nothing but more austerity and destruction. We built this city. We must demand no more payments to the banks.”

After two weeks of intense testimony from witnesses, the state is expected to rest their case in the George Zimmerman second-degree murder trial and today the prosecution’s first witness was Sybrina Fulton, who when asked to identify her sons, strongly testified:

“My youngest son is Trayvon Benjamin Martin. He’s in heaven.”

Fulton went on to state that the screams heard on the 911 call are most certainly Trayvon Martin’s and furthermore and more highlights from the testimony include:

– Sabryna identifies Trayvon by telling court about his tattoos. Trayvon had two tattoos, praying hands and “my name” on his left wrist. The teenager was right-handed.

– Bernie de la Rionda plays the 911 tape with screams in the background. Asked if she can identify the screaming. “Yes, it’s Trayvon Benjamin Martin.”

– During cross examination, O’Mara tells Fulton that he’s sorry for her loss. BDLR objects.

– O’Mara questions Fulton about the first time she heard the tape. It was revealed that she wasn’t prepared for the screams when she first heard the tape with Trayvon’s father, Jahvaris Fulton, family lawyers, and mayor.

– O’Mara asks Fulton a series of questions about “hope.” She replies, “I don’t hope for anything.”

– During redirect, Fulton tells BDLR that what she hoped was that Trayvon was still here, alive.

DETROIT — Members of Detroit Kevin Carey’s family traveled from all over the U.S. to join with dozens of Detroiters who fought in the trenches with Kevin for his people and all the oppressed for decades. During the memorial ceremony held at the James H. Cole Northwest Chapel, many took the mike to pay emotional, heartfelt and militant tributes to their friend.

Kevin passed away June 11, after a long battle with various illnesses. His friends and family said despite those illnesses, he kept on in the struggle. One friend said he told Kevin, who corresponded with and advocated for prisoners throughout Michigan, that there were 48,000 incarcerated in the state. He said he asked him whether he was going to fight for every one of them. Kevin responded with a firm “YES,” he said.

Kevin’s obituary was read by his friend Kimberly Green. Green worked with Kevin on the Detroit People’s Task Force, set up several years ago by prisoners and their families to free those wrongfully incarcerated due to hundreds of errors made by Detroit’s crime lab. The crime lab scandal was broadly publicized in the daily media, as were protests led by the People’s Task Force. Eventually, the Task Force took on the cases of other prisoners as well, with the assistance of its legal staff Cornell Squires and Leonard Eston.

Along with Squires, Task Force President Marilyn Jordan was moved to tears when recounting the dedicated work Kevin did on behalf of prisoners. They included Jordan’s  son Kelly Nobles, incarcerated in 2002 on crime lab evidence Jordan says was falsified. Nobles just missed the deadline Worthy set for going back to review evidence in questioned cases.

Many spoke personally of Kevin’s warmth and caring for people, his sense of humor, his love for movies and the Detroit Tigers. Kevin’s father was a medical doctor in Detroit at a time when there was severe discrimination against Black doctors. His sister Dr. LaTanya Carey-Ledford, who coordinated the funeral ceremonies, carried on the family tradition. She said she graduated from Wayne State University’s Medical School and later practiced for many years at Detroit Receiving Hospital, then known as Detroit General before it was privatized in 1980.

Jerry Goldberg of Workers World Party recalled that Kevin worked on the campaign to free Nelson Mandela decades ago, before Mandela’s name was widely known. Members of the African National Congress came to Detroit for events Kevin and others planned, Goldberg said. Mandela is close to death himself now, after 28 years of incarceration by the apartheid South African regime, his victorious release, and his tenure as president of South Africa afterwards.

The chapel minister was visibly moved by the stirring tributes paid to Kevin, many of which exceeded the two-minute limit listed on the program. He concluded the ceremony with a comforting statement that even though warriors like Kevin may not live to see victory from their battles, they will live on when victories are achieved.

After the ceremony at James H. Cole Chapel, Kevin’s family and friends joined to celebrate his life at the Detroit headquarters of Workers World Party at 5920 Second. It was several hours before they finished getting to know each other, and reminiscing about Kevin’s life and love for the people.
